A routine dental treatment
Root canal treatment is one of the final restorations that we can carry out in order to save your tooth. It is a routine dental treatment and our skilled dentists have a vast experience of this procedure.
What is involved?
We would start with an x-ray of the area so that we can visualise the tooth, assess the case and plan the treatment appropriately. Upon examining the x-ray, very complex root canal treatments may require a referral to a specialist in root canal treatments (an endodontist)
Root canal treatments are carried out to clean and fill the spaces inside your tooth where the nerve and blood vessels would normally be. This area can become infected with bacteria if a tooth is decayed, fractured, traumatised or cracked. The procedure would start with removing any decay and assessing any cracks, if the tooth is fixable, we can then begin the root canal filling.
Root canals are hollow tubes inside your tooth root where your nerve and blood vessels would have been, we clean the inside of your tooth with anti-bacterial liquids and use special hand and mechanical files to clean and shape your root canals ready for a special rubber filling.
Once the root canal filling is complete a crown is usually recommended for the tooth. The tooth is more brittle once a root canal treatment is carried out and a crown can help to prevent any fractures from occurring. The crown also provides a brilliant seal against bacteria in the future. Your dentist will discuss this in more detail with you at your visit.

Frequently Asked Questions
We are often asked many questions associated with our treatment, and the questions listed below form a selection of the most frequently asked. If you have any questions which do not appear in this list, please contact us.
Root canal fillings are carried out under local anaesthetic and are therefore pain free once you are numb. Following the treatment, there can be a little soreness, which we would advise over the counter painkillers to counteract.
The alternative treatment is an extraction of the tooth in question. We can then possible replace the tooth with a denture, bridge or implant.
As with any dental treatment, root canal treatments are not guaranteed to work for you. The success rate of a root canal treatment however is very high when the treatment can be carried out to a good standard, with 9 out of 10 root canal treated teeth surviving for 8 to 10 years.
You can increase the success rate of your root treated tooth post treatment by having the tooth crowned immediately or soon after the treatment has been completed. You should then ensure the tooth is kept clean, using interdental brushes in between the tooth daily, maintaining a heathy diet and using fluoride toothpaste.Â
